Solo vs pool mining

I used a pool first for 5 days and made 100 PIRL. I was happy, but since I hit 11 blocks during that time I decided to try mining solo. There's no technical difference in generating blocks in pooling vs. solo mining. The only difference is that pool mining can create a more steady pay flow. Why do people do pooled mining?
